Press Release: Homegrown Halifax Film A BUG AND A BAG OF WEED Lights Up on December 7
The stoner comedy A BUG AND A BAG OF WEED, shot in Spryfield, NS, will be released in Atlantic theatres on December 7, 2007. Audiences can catch the film at Bayers Lake Empire 17 in Halifax, Empire 6 in Dartmouth and at the Crystal Palace 8 Cinemas in Moncton.
A BUG AND A BAG OF WEED was written by Chris Cuthbertson and directed by David Gonella. The film was produced by Chris Cuthbertson, Drew Hagen and Nico Lorenzutti, who also star in the film, and Michael Mason and is distributed by Domino Film and Television International Ltd.
“This film is the hit audiences are looking for,” said Jeanne Ritter, President of Domino Film. “I can already picture concession-stand lineups of viewers with the munchies.”
A BUG AND A BAG OF WEED follows the misadventures of Peter Jordan – 31 years old, $35,000 in debt and a computer salesman at Spryfield’s Super Duper Computers for seven long years. Together, with his equally down-on-their-luck co-workers Stan and Willie, Peter dreams of escaping the daily drudgery of "don't forget to sell the extended warranty." When Peter's long-lost high school buddy Frehley blows into town the boys’ hum-drum lives are turned into a non-stop, beer-soaked party, full of loud music and beautiful girls. High on the experience, Peter whips out the credit cards to buy his dream car, a classic Volkswagen Bug. But when Frehley suddenly splits town, straight-laced Peter and his buddies are shocked to find themselves left with a hockey bag stuffed full of primo weed. Seizing a choice opportunity to get themselves out of debt, the trio put the Bug and their computer-selling techniques to new uses to achieve their ultimate sales goal!
A BUG AND A BAG OF WEED stars Sebastian Spence (First Wave, Battlestar Galactica), Christopher Shyer (Phenomenon II, Whistler), Chris Cuthbertson, Drew Hagen, Nico Lorenzutti and Laura Kohoot. Local talent also includes: Renée Abbott, Nigel Bennett (Lexx, Forever Knight), Bill Carr, Mary Colin Chisolm, Amelia Curran, Chase Duffy, Shawn Duggan, John Dunsworth, David Flemming, George Green, Ryan Scott Greene, Amy Kerr, Veronica Reynolds and Ian Tench.

Goodbye, so long, farewell for now
You're gonna leave a big hole around here
But it's up to us to fill it up again somehow
It's up to us to fill it up again somehow
You live each day as if it was your last
May you have so many more and more and more
If we only will it, it may come to pass
If we only will it, it may come to pass
Hope to see you in New Orleans
Sit by the fountain of your love sweet love
You're like a couple of love-struck doves
Come over here, and give us a hug....

Chartattack Review:
JILL BARBER For All Time (Baudelaire/Dependent/Outside) Jill Barber has one of those warm, honeyed voices that evokes the vocals of Sarah Harmer and Sarah Slean, only less angular than the former and less fey than the latter. For All Time features a careful selection of songs that showcase Barber's varied styles. There's the gentle blues of "Just For Now," the coy, jazzy playfulness of "When I'm Making Love To You" and the finger-snapping groove of "Hard Line." Mournful strains of pedal steel mix with gentle swells of piano to underpin Barber's acoustic guitar work. Overall, it's a well-crafted and understated album from a talent who, over the past few years, has been developing and emerging to ensure herself a well-deserved spot in the scene. – Shannon Whibbs

CBC Radio 3: Podcast #64 – Conn Smythe Sleepover: features The Stolen Minks & Rachelle's short lived affair with the Conn Smythe trophy.
Arguably CBC's wackest show ever, Freestyle spun Windom Earle's "Kitten vs Pegasus" on Friday. Not sure the context, but it probably has more to do with the sensibilities of Lost & Found host Matt Rainnie, who uses the track "Ode to Greg's Cat" as his closing music. The CD Goldwave debuted at number one on CKDU and is also starting to appear in campus/community charts across Canada.
The Sharp Like Knives and Windom Earle live experience was reviewed in Toronto's Now weekly (NNNN out of NNNNN).
It takes more than just a few good bands to tip a show past merely entertaining into excellent or outstanding territory - there's gotta be that vibe that gets rolling early and stays till the last band packs it up. Good thing Halifax's Windom Earle set the bar high right away Friday at Sneaky Dee's with an energetic and gleefully fun set. The mostly instrumental three-piece featuring guitar, bass and keys with programmed beats danced through a well-crafted collection of catchy New Order- and Postal Service-inspired jams. But it wasn't until their endearing karaoke-esque covers of A-ha's classic electro-jam Take On Me and Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone that it really clicked: these guys are the shit. Fellow East Coasters Sharp Like Knives who count two of Windom Earle's members among their flock were no less energetic. Having seen them a year ago, I can honestly say that while they were good then, they've honed their showmanship and sound tenfold since. Vocalist Paul Hammond fought for attention over the bombastic musical start-stops of his bandmates, who blasted and thrashed through songs with a heavy At the Drive-In influence, inspiring several failed attempts at body-surfing from one small group of overzealous fans. Knives also inspired some dink to decide it was punk to spit clouds of mist in the air at regular intervals.

Review:
Windom Earle, Gold Wave (Boost Ventilator)
Yup, this Haligonian affair boasts 11 members in the CD credits, and yes, glockenspiel figures prominently. But chamber pop this ain't. The one proper song, with vocals and standard structure, is "Kitten vs. Pegasus," which unfortunately comes off like a Modern English number, and that we don't need (the macho-meltdown joke of "Ted Nugent" wears thin fast too). But the rest isn't songs so much as motifs worked to perfection, grafting together surf, new wave, math rock and the aforementioned orch-pop element to excellent, energetic, harmonious effect. The propulsive "Get On Into It" bears shades of Shadowy Men, "Guitorgan" is pumped up and powerful, and "You Can't Dance to Dreams," playing a sweet piano pattern off explosive drums, closes the record with class. 8/10 (Rupert Bottenberg, Music Editor, Montreal Mirror)
Disclosure: I am helping Windom Earle with this new CD, so my usual iron glad integrity of unobjectiviely posting posters on behalf of strangers will forever be tarnished.

Today's Buck reference: "A Gorilla Driving a Pick-Up Truck", wherein Keith mumbles about a primate motorist in a fake dusty-cowboy voice over eerie slide guitars and harmonicas: "I was moving fast/ He got up in front/ The gorilla looked at me and passed/ He was on my ass." It could be a Buck 65 parody, but after a few listens, it starts to sound like the work of another black man with O.G. outsider-artist ranter-status and a white fanbase whose giggly appreciation never moves too far from look-at-this condescension: Wesley Willis. - Pitchfork on The Return of Dr. Octagon

"Ah, springtime, finally! It miraculously got up to 84 degrees here in Minneapolis yesterday, and while I could have used a little more of a gradual move towards summer, I won't complain. (Besides, it will probably snow next week.) One of the best things about spring, in addition to people emerging from their winter cocoons, is the music you get to indulge in, those songs that sound like people emerging from their cocoons. This is how it felt listening to the Heavy Blinkers' record The Night And I Are Still So Young. "

S&N 'Homages' Double 7" EP Sixtoo (1200hobos/Sebutones/etc.) and Norsola Johnson (Godspeed/Mollases/etc.) are S&N. No need for some witty snapping sales pitch here. Shit is hot. 4 sides of heat...with Sixtoo on live and not live drums and electronics. Norsola plays the cello, bass and other assorted instruments. Yes!
Sixtoo 'Duration' CD/DVD Re-issue! Originally produced on Dollar Store VHS copies, we decided it deserved an actual DVD release, a full step up from the original 50 dollar store tapes that it was home-duped on! Say word. Also included on the bonus DVD is a full gallery section, a description of the project, and a high res gallery of other Sixtoo related goodness. There is also a CD of the instrumental hiphop classic Duration album.
* Buy Nothing Day is Friday Nov 25
There will be a street party and musical march meeting at Grand Parade Square at 5:30pm, and leaving at 6:00pm.
Bring noisemakers, merriment, and fun to celebrate Buy Nothing Day. If you can't make the celebrations, then tune in to CKDU 97.5 from 6-7pm for live updates.

Best of Halifax 2005
Note: actual award and picture of Sean not available at press time
Best local website: halifaxlocals.com
Wi-five! Halifaxlocals.com wins for the second straight year as the best local website, keeping us all in the loop about the Halifax music scene. The site relies on an open-source, message board-style format that keeps things current—and unpredictable. “On the front page of Halifaxlocals, you’ll typically see a lot of show posters, but that was really not my original intent at all,” says site moderator and co-founder Sean MacGillivray. “That’s just what the user base has done with it. That space was supposed to be filled with news, filled with stuff that’s going on and original content, but all of the sudden people got this idea to put up their show posters. And now we’re inundated with requests to put up posters!”

JazzEast Seeking Support
JazzEast, producer of the TD Canada Trust Atlantic Jazz Festival, has embarked on a major fundraising campaign to alleviate short term difficulties and set the stage for future stability. The campaign is proceeding on several fronts including: an appeal to members, a corporate campaign, a fundraising event in December, and a re-examination and re-structuring of the organization and its activities. The goal is to raise $250,000 – an amount that would alleviate the current deficit and contribute to the re-establishment of a reserve fund for future stability.
We are turning to all of our constituents for support and assistance. This could come in many forms; you could:
• Make a tax deductible donation to JazzEast
• Bring us ideas for fundraising
• Volunteer to help with fundraising activities
• Bring us contacts for people that might support us with cash or in-kind donations
• Bring us leads for new sponsors
• Buy tickets to and tell your friends about our presentations all year round
• Buy a JazzEast membership
Please feel free to contact anyone in the office by e-mail or drop by – for more information or to make a contribution to the cause. And may we keep enjoying live music!

"...The easiest reference to be drawn here is to Boards of Canada, whose warm analogue tones and shapeshifting rhythms seem to have informed Werb's musical approach. But where that Scottish duo relies largely on samples for its base materials, the Vancouverite builds his tracks all by his lonesome, as evidenced by "Piano" and "Woodhands Theme Song", both of which are predicated on solo runs up and down the ivories. The best and most richly arranged song here is probably "Honest Broker", a kind of all-in-one album summation that distills the producer's brainiac lounge aesthetic into nine spellbinding minutes. If the Suicide Girls made porn movies, this would be their soundtrack." - The Georgia Straight

Today Buck 65 released Secret House Against The World. Here is a new fangled e-card (a completely uncomfortable looking photo shoot, cover of Rick of the Skin's "Devil Eyes," music video in windows media player format and a video game) and "Kennedy Killed the Hat" is the free download of the day through the iTunes music store (initial reaction: yeah, that's about what it is worth).
Also, Apple announced podcasting integration with the latest addition of iTunes. Let's Get Baked and CBC Radio 3 are two examples that you can listen or subscribe to for free. Self-assured Nova Scotian rock'n'rollers and singer-songwriter on their independent sophomoric national tour
REELS and RUTH MINNIKIN
Halifax, Nova Scotia's REELS and RUTH MINNIKIN will set the proverbial
sail on an eight-week Canadian tour in continuing promotion of their latest
respective releases -- Reels' first, eponymous debut, and Minnikin's latest,
"Marooned and Blue." Reels now perform in support of distribution through
Zunior.com ("The Little Label") and East Coast Rising Entertainment
(eastcoastrising.ca).
Since 2003, Reels have taken their sound to Toronto's 2004 North by
Northeast festival, and last summer completed a self-directed 20-date
Canadian tour, having the fortune to warm up crowds for bands like Cuff the
Duke and The Ramblin' Ambassadors. Positive critical and popular press, and
infrequent, enthusiastic live shows have bred a consistent east coast
contingent of showgoers. Unconventionality holds that the band does not
apply the word "unique" to their rock'n'roll and diluted country sound;
instead, it is a word apparently thrown around by critics and casual
listeners when making broad connections between the band's sound, and the
sound of the early '90's Moncton and Halifax music scenes.
Ruth Minnikin's 10-year writing, recording and touring ambition has had her
making music with The Guthries, Dale Murray and Gabriel Minnikin,
participate in collaborations with Joel Plaskett, Al Tuck, Kate Maki, and
Kris Kristofferson, and tour internationally with The Guthries, The Heavy
Blinkers, and as a solo artist. Since the winter of 2005, she has assumed
bass and vocal duties with Reels. Praise for Minnikin's creations comes
readily; her self-directed tours and albums could be taken as effortless
insofar as her commitment to professional-grade performances.

Via Maplemusic: Sloan, one of Canada's most loved bands, are releasing a greatest hits album aptly titled A Side Wins: Singles 1992-2005. The new disc features all of the band's singles (including two new songs, "All Used Up" is at radio now!) as well as a bonus DVD with all of the videos and some special behind the scenes footage. It's a must have for any Sloan fan so pre-order it today at MapleMusic.
Via Emusic: The Holy Shroud - Ghost Repeaters and 80 Records And We're Not Broke Yet (Disc 1) Label Sampler
Via Dose: It was clear that 90% of the crowd just didn't get why we were listening to a white guy spewing country-tinging raps about the size of his manhood. But those 10% if us that did get it, REALLY got it. We were dancing around and shouting like crazy (props to the dude next to me who was screaming every word). (Coachella Blog)
Via Brockway Entertainment: Cock Dynamics Re-Release - On April 26th, Hand Solo Records re-released the Canadian Classic: 'Cock Dynamics.' This compilation of sensual Canadian hip hop was conceived by "Casa-Nova Scotians" Buck 65 and Moves and released by Hand'Solo Records in 1998. Exclusive tracks by Buck 65, Moka Only, Tachichi, Ishkan, Moves, and other sexually-charged emcees, have made this limited-edition cassette highly sought-after by fans. In the Year of the Cock (aka 2005), it seems only appropriate to make this classic rarity available again. Plus, Fredericton/Halifax's First Words is composed of producer/DJ Jorun (worked with Buck 65, Universal Soul & more), DJ STV and emcees Sean One & Above. Watch out for Jorun/Sean One's 7" release due by the end of May. For more info: http://www.dead-beats.ca

FW: Pearl Jam's Canadian Tour!
In anticipation of their upcoming studio release, Pearl Jam along
with the Ten Club are proud to announce a 15 city tour of the
great country of Canada. The tour opens on September 2nd in
Vancouver, B.C. and ends up in St. John’s Newfoundland on
September 24th. The Ten Club pre-sale starts today April 25,
2005 and ends Monday, May 9, 2005, at 5:00 pm pacific time.
• Ten Club tickets will be sold ONLY on-line and ONLY at
pearljam.com. There will be no mail order for Ten Club tickets
on this tour.
• The base ticket price for the tour is $59.50 CDN ($52.06
USD) per ticket plus applicable fees. Ten Club tickets available
in pairs only. No single ticket sales. There will be a $3.50 USD
service charge per ticket plus a $1.53 USD bank card processing
fee per ticket.
• Visa and Mastercard are the only acceptable forms of
payment.
• You can buy only one pair of tickets per show but there is
no limit to the number of shows fan club members can attend.
• Tickets will be allocated using seniority in the Ten Club.
• An email confirmation will arrive in advance of the public
on-sale.
• Ten Club tickets are for members only. Members must
show photo I.D, at venue will call window to pick up tickets on
day-of-show only.
• Re-selling Ten Club tickets will result in revocation of fan
club privileges.
Here’s how the system will work:
Go to http://secure.pearljam.com/ and log in to your Ten Club
account. If you are not an up-to-date member you will not be
eligible for Canadian tickets. You cannot purchase a
membership and be eligible for tickets at this time. However,
purchasing a membership now will allow you to purchase tickets
to future dates AFTER the Canadian tour. Once we process ALL
of the ticket orders, we will prioritize the seats according to
your member number. Tickets will be available for you at the
Ten Club ticket window prior to each show. You MUST show
your photo I.D. to get your tickets.
Please note: besides this being the first time we’ve offered Ten
Club tickets on-line, there are two more major changes in
progress.
1. Tickets will not be distributed in “blocks”. We listened to your
feedback and took note of the problems with the block system.
On this tour we will secure all of the tickets prior to the shows
and allocate them ahead of time. So your tickets will be in an
envelope with your name on it at the Ten Club ticket window
before the show. So showing up early will not get you a better
seat. This time we mean it.
2. We will use some of the seats in the “wings” for the Ten Club.
There are really great seats that are located just off the floor,
but very close to the sides of the stage. We haven’t used these
seats for Ten Club members on previous tours, but we think that
those seats are far superior to those that are towards the back
of the floor and we think that those seats should be filled with
Ten Club members. It’s not going to be an exact science, but
we’ll do our best to prioritize seats to make sure Ten Club
members get the “best seats in the house.”
For questions or information regarding your tickets please
contact tickets@tenclub.net. For questions or concerns about
your membership, please contact info@tenclub.net. Keep in
mind that due to the inevitable high volume of requests for
customer service, a response to your questions may not be
immediate. We will answer your emails in the order they are
received, so please avoid sending multiple messages. All sales
are final. No refunds. All prices are in US dollars (USD) per PAIR
of tickets. All dates subject to change.

Note: Margaret Atwood will not be playing the theremin...nor will she be in attendence with her magical ghost hand.
One Ring Zero
Friday, April 8, $10/10PM
Khyber Club, 1588 Barrington Street
One Ring Zero is Michael Hearst and Joshua Camp. The Brooklyn-based duo has released five CDs, including their critically acclaimed album, As Smart As We Are, a book-cum-CD, featuring songs with lyrics contributed by such authors as Jonathan Lethem, Margaret Atwood, Paul Auster, Dave Eggers, A.M. Homes, Rick Moody, Neil Gaiman, and Denis Johnson. One Ring Zero has performed at music venues and cultural institutions including the Whitney Museum of Art, Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park, Central Park Summer Stage, Book Expo America in Chicago, the Calgary Folk Festival, and Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre. One Ring Zero has received grants from The Virginia commission for the Arts and The National Endowment for the Arts. The music has been featured in dance concerts, films and animations, fashion shows, and NPR programming including This American Life, Fresh Air, and The Next Big Thing.
Part of the Halifax International Writers Festival.
Quotes:
"I HAVE A CRUSH ON ONE RING ZERO, with their tweed sport coats and ties and tattered sneakers, their smarty-pants patter and killer acid-klezmer ways, and their theremin, claviola, and "other noises," oh my! Their forthcoming album, AS SMART AS WE ARE, births the equation Atwood + Auster + Eggers + Lethem + Moody and the like + One Ring Zero = A BEAUTIFUL SHEBANG OF LITERARY AND AURAL MISCHIEF.
- The Village Voice - Dec, 2003
"Accordions, organs, theremins, and the occasional brass horn and homemade instrument combine to make soundscapes that are both haunting and entertaining."
- The New Yorker - Feb, 2002
"....gypsy-klezmer circus-flea-cartoon-music you mainly hear in your dreams"
- The Forward - Oct, 2003
"They are the sounds of a circus parade passing through a cemetery"
- Richmond Music Journal-.Nov. 1999
"Jewish wedding music played by ghosts and goblins, a buzzingly angular Balkan soundscape.."

Opened to registered delegates. If you are going to be around the "official" ECMA events and happenings I would consider checking out at least the panel discussion. There will be representatives from Electronic Arts and music supervisors from S.L. Feldman & Associates and South Bay Music Group. For example, Wintersleep landed "Sore" on Queer as Folk after meeting the music supervisor in St. John's last year. Note: Not to get all "Simon" on your ass, but if your fanclub consists of your mom and your best friends this probably isn't for you. From the Anti-Hit List 6. CAMOUFLAGE NIGHTS, "Skies Are Foggy": "It's not easy being sleazy / I get so wheezy / When those evil urges seize me..." Led by former Thrush Hermit/ Dears guitarist Rob Benvie and Thrush Hermit bassist Ian McGettigan, this woozy amalgam of rock, hip-hop and the kitchen sink is dying to be adopted as the official anthem of the stubbornly dissolute. (From The Summer of 2004, www.camouflagenights.com) From Pitchfork's Free (but paid for) downloads: MP3: The Burdocks: "Pop Cult" Whatever happened to the East Coast of Canada? Years after the hype has died down the current generation of Maritime rock bands is a little older, a little wiser and ready to reignite the regions once vaunted lo-fi torch. Leading the charge is the Halifax band, the Burdocks. Retaining the wry pop ideals of their forbearers, these do-it-yourself stalwarts quickly established themselves as fan favourites across the country through their loud, raucous, chaotic shows and various recorded gems, released on Out of Touch Records. Through three releases (Lips and Assholes E.P, I Have a Million Friends L.P, Airplane Tracks E.P), the band has developed their distinctive ‘scrap rock’ sound, wherein different song fragments and styles are expertly sewn together to create a unique sound that is at once choppy and abrasive yet somehow cohesive and poppy. Co-songwriters Christian Simmons and Seth Smith craft the band’s dynamic, intricate rock songs, melding classic pop structures with progressive sophistication and indie-rock sincerity to produce songs that buck the current trend of inflexible genre adherence while still maintaining a distinct, instantly recognizable character. The band is just about to enter the House of Miracles to record their second full length, which should be out in the new year. [theburdocks.com]

MONDAY NIGHT MOVIES PRESENTS
Metallica Some Kind of Monster (Oct 25th)
Acclaimed documentary filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky (Brother's Keeper, Paradise Lost) provide a fascinating portrait of the most successful heavy metal band of all time, as they face personal and professional challenges while recording their first studio album of original songs in over five years. In the tradition of Don't Look Back and Gimme Shelter, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster transcends the conventions of the "rock and roll movie" genre, trading rock star posing for truthful introspection.
METALLICA: Some Kind of Monster screens Monday Oct.25th 7PM, Empire Park Lane Cinemas. Tickets go on sale at 6PM. $9 / $7 members.
MONDAY NIGHT MOVIES is a presentation of The Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative in association with the Film Circuit and Empire Theatres. With generous support from The Coast and 97.5 CKDU FM.
For further information 420-4480 or screenings@afcoop.ca
This previously played at Bayers Lake and was actually worth the 1.5 hour bus ride (and I am not even what you would call a "fan"). Here is the Rotten Tomatoes listing if you are looking for what the critics said.

From the deep, dark depths of the messageboard...
Mike O'Neill - The Owl
The second solo record from Mike O'Neill is collection of songs, created and crafted over the past two years, that cements his reputation as one of the country's most respected songwriters. On The Owl, Mike plays and sings everything, on a record recorded at home in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Includes a guest appearance from Matt Murphy (Super Friendz).
We are pleased to announce that is the first Zunior-only release, as this album is not available in stores.
You can download it here by the song ($0.88) or the entire album ($8.88). Payments are handled by Paypal. You can also review the music yourself, which is what I plan to do once I download the damn thing.

Mayor of the Sunset Strip
Directed By George Hickenlooper
Featuring Rodney Bingenheimer, David Bowie, Courtney Love, Gwen Stefani, Mick Jagger, Nancy Sinatra and others
Running Time: 94 minutes
In The Mayor Of The Sunset Strip director George Hickenlooper (Heart Of Darkness) takes us on a kind of homeric journery through the world of celebrity and pop and giving face to the explosive but fleeting phenomenon of fame and the harsh reality that lies beneath it's surface.
Rodney Bingenheimer has been a disc jockey at the venerable Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM for some thirty years. His legend is that he was the first to play records by The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Van Halen, The Go-Go's, The Clash, The Smiths, Nirvana, Oasis, Coldplay and many more. Before that, he was the unlikely impresario of Rodney Bingenheimer’s English Disco, a glam-era club where Bowie, Iggy Pop, T. Rex, Led Zeppelin and Sweet were regulars. A publicist for Linda Ronstadt and Rod Stewart. Living with Sonny and Cher. A double for Davy Jones! A Connie Stevens autograph seeker. He’s almost famous.
But now, tucked away in the midnight slot on corporate KROQ, one wonders how long the purveyor of "things people care less" about can stay on the air. Such is the chronology of a twentieth-century boy, a life forged not in the white heat of pop culture, but in its forlorn shadows. The question of celebrity, and the depiction of the culture that congeals around it, is at the core of this kinetic chronicle. "Godhead" – Rodney’s oft-bestowed term for fame’s pinnacle – is elusive, addictive, fleeting.

Hey!
There's a Piggy reunion show in the works for Friday, June 18 at the Khyber! Old Man Luedecke and Ruth Minnikin are scheduled to open. Any former Piggy alumni are being asked to contact Lucas Dambergs ASAP.
Here are some more unrelated reviews:
"Pip Skizzy" best exemplifies the styles of both Pipi Skid and producer Mcenroe. The backdrop hits with wavering Spanish guitar and repeating jazz hi-hats, while Pipi justifies murder ("You smell like McDonald's and Wal-Mart/ By killing you, I'm acting globally, doing a small part"), forced impotency ("While you listen to 'Rapture', I'ma rupture your nuts/ Blondie's singing and I'm swinging and you can't have no children"), and presidential assassination ("And now everybody scream/ As I mow down Bush and his security team"). The song sets the album's tone perfectly. From Pitchfork's review of Pipi Skid: Funny Farm (Peanuts & Corn)
After the cold, detached album Take Nothing for Granted, Andrew Duke comes back to involving themes and engaging music on Just Because You Can Doesn't Mean You Should. The title refers to how the Halifax Regional Municipality lets promoters build anything anywhere while condemning the architectural heritage of his home town to be wiped out. This reflection on the urban environment complements what had been featured on the album Physical and Mental Health and echoes the feelings of revolt permeating throughout More Destructive Than Organized. And yet, if sound sources evoke the legacy of Man (titles like “Non-Constructive Construction" and “Paradise Paving" are self-explanatory) and the advance of technology (“May Might Can Could" appears to be a variation on the ring of a telephone), the music in general refrains from becoming too figurative. Rhythm occurs as the result of looping, shaping the pieces into toe-tapping artifacts that don't actually invite you to dance. “Non-Constructive Construction" and “Paradise Paving" are the most obvious, listener-grabbing tracks, their rhythmical construction-related sounds evoking the conquering march of steel and concrete over historical buildings. The latter, featuring field recordings by Sandro Perri (aka Polmo Polpo), is of particular interest. So are “PHC," “Insidious," and “Vinyl Hiss Voice," the latter featuring Loam. “Container Anxiety (Version)," is an extended and much reworked/remixed version of the piece “Container Anxiety" which concluded Duke's 2002 album Highest Common Denominator. A conversation between Duke and Kim Cascone on music-making and the production of an album, it gives the disc its title (which actually refers to the total duration a CD can have). Just Because You Can Doesn't Mean You Should is Andrew Duke at his best: sharp, insidious, varied, captivating and genre-pushing. Recommended. — François Couture AMG's review of Andrew Duke's Just Because You Can Doesn't Mean You Should. More on Andrew Duke.

Music Reviews from around the web...featuring artists w/ Halifax connections:
From the All Music Guide: Sixtoo, Chewing on Glass & Other Miracle Cures (Ninjatune)
Canadian hip-hop beathead Sixtoo belongs to a generation of producers who forsake the Classic Beats and Breaks style of track construction for an aesthetic that samples and reworks their own playing as well as that of their friends -- Pretty Purdie plus Roscoe Mitchell. Based in Halifax and later Montreal, the veteran of his own solo records as well as productions and accompanying gigs for Buck 65, 1200 Hobos, and Anticon among others, his first record for Ninja Tune isn't instrumental hip-hop but rather down-tempo funk with a cinematic flair -- a close compatriot of J Swinscoe's Cinematic Orchestra. Sixtoo's productions are dripping with atmosphere, and he possesses the fiending of a soundtracker for sounds that listeners haven't heard before but can immediately associate with a feeling -- and that feeling is usually a delicious sense of dread. "Boxcutter Emporium, Pt. 2," one of three tracks in a suite interspersed throughout the album, succeeds despite only sparsely using a few elements: a hi-hat-heavy drum kit, a bass line with only one change, and an oscillating bell sound. "Storm Clouds & Silver Linings," his feature collaboration with Can vocalist Damo Suzuki, is an inspired piece of avant funk, wherein a friend's sampled drumming and Matt Kelly's distorted guitar frames Suzuki's improvised vocalizing. These highlights, however, don't serve to frame a compelling full-length. In fact, the two collaborations with the highest profiles -- separate tracks featuring a pair of Godspeed You Black Emperor! members, cellist Norsola Johnson and bassist Thierry Amar -- are meandering and ineffective. - John Bush
From the Village Voice: Pipi Skid, Funny Farm (Peanuts & Corn)
From secret hip-hop hot spot Winnipeg, just what the genre needs—an angry Caucasian with space and germ issues and rotting teeth he can't afford to fix. Plus, for that urban touch, a producer from Vancouver. By adding elegance and eloquence to Pipi's congested utterances and anti-American analysis—check the basslines, which are sometimes organlike, once I think bowed, and always mixed to accentuate melody—McEnroe makes the rapper seem fully socialized. No hip-hop lyric this year will get more done than "5:20 AM," which is when Pipi wakes up for his job in the nursing home. A MINUS
From the Onion A.V. Club: Sloan, Action Pact (Koch)
The cultishly admired Canadian pop-rock band Sloan hasn't progressed much since its 1996 breakthrough One Chord To Another, which abandoned halfhearted stabs at grunge in favor of shaggy-haired '70s pop. The group went heavier and deeper on 1998's Navy Blues, fooled around with suite-like arrangements and autobiography on 1999's masterful Between The Bridges, and made a stab at modernizing with synthesizers and atmospherics on 2001's Pretty Together. But the core sound remained the same: pounding, whooping rock anthems designed to make dingy clubs sound like circa-1978 Kiss concerts. Sloan's new Action Pact (finally available in the U.S., after last year's Canadian release) might initially sound underwhelming to longtime devotees, since the record's unvarying thud and shout-along choruses are about as obvious as the band has ever been. Roaring, single-minded tracks like "Backstabbin'" and "Hollow Head" verge on arena-rock parody, rather than the loving homage that has been Sloan's stock in trade for almost a decade. But like a lot of the group's albums, Action Pact has to be broken in a little. The sublime simplicity of "False Alarm," "Nothing Lasts Forever Anymore," and "I Was Wrong" sounds more impressive with repetition, especially when compared to modern rock acts that lack Sloan's zest, warmth, and personality. Its charm is distilled perfectly in the two-minute stomper "Ready For You," which consists of two or three pounding power chords and a chorus that's just the song title. "Ready For You" kicks down the door, lumbers through the room, and exits before it overstays its welcome, while leaving a few bucks behind to cover the damage. Like Sloan itself, it's a friendly monster. —Noel Murray

A review from Chart:
URBAN SURF KINGS, Surf Vs The Flying Saucers (USK International)
In the world of the Urban Surf Kings, nasty flying saucers from outer space are destroying the planet and surf music seems to be the only way to fight back. Zowie! These guys throw everything they can at the evil invaders, including tons o' surf, some western twang ("Rocket Ranch"), some sneaky spy bits ("Operation H.O.D.A.D."), a righteous sonic fuzz fest ("Zombie Road Trip") and a new, hip-shakin', dance craze ("Go Go Island"). They even visit epic soundtrack land with "Valley Of The Kings," which would have been perfect if Ben Hur had been racing surf boards rather than chariots. Whether or not they’re successful in stopping the aliens (although the final cut "Saucers In The Sunset" seems to suggest they are), this is a fine second full-length release from Dartmouth, NS's kings of surf. Look to the skies! - Dan "The Mouth" Lovranski
